Bath is a treasure of historic landmarks, and has been a tourist destination since the Romans were there. And just like any other touristy town, prices can be a little steep. There are some things you just must do in Bath, and they are worth paying for, but we want to give you a few free things to do in Bath so that you can feel like a local.
4 Free Things to Do in Bath, England
1. Have a Wander. Walking around a UNESCO world heritage city is like window shopping at expensive boutiques. You can easily fill up on the charm of the narrow winding streets in an afternoon or two of walking. One of our favorite ways to see a city is on foot. There is so much detail you can make out when traveling at this slow pace.
2. Listen to a Busker. Bath is a very touristic city, and has been since Roman times when it was used specifically to escape city life in favor of the country air and healing waters. On any occasion during the week you can find the plazas and commercial areas ringing out with the sounds of angelic voices, guitar strumming crooners or the clack of plastic buckets being beaten with sticks. Many of these folks are quite talented, so stop and listen for a minute or two.
3. Mayor's Free Walking Tour. There aren't many free things in the world. There is always always always a catch - a required tip at the end, a 30 minute sales seminar to suffer through or some kind of other offer. This isn't the case with the free walking tours provided by the Mayor of Bath's Corp of Honorary Guides. They are adamant that they don't even accept tips. At the end our guide hid her hands behind her back and gave a short bow before disappearing through the rain into the crowd.
They've received The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service which is the highest award for a volunteer group in the UK, and have been giving free tours since 1934. Do yourself a favor and join one of these free tours. We learned many things we wouldn't have otherwise known.
4. Alexandra Park. Bath is built on and around 7 hills, just as Rome was, so it comes as no surprise that at the top of one of these hills sits a big grassy park. Our waiter told us about it and described the views. Our hotel was half way up the hill already so all we had to do one morning is continue on the incline. We would have skipped this were it not for his descriptions of the view. It's worth the haul, which makes the destination that much more special upon arrival. We were greeted with an old man placing a commemorative marker on a bench that said "Enjoy the View My Friend" and another elderly gentleman pointed out all the highlights of Bath, which lay below us in all it's miniature splendor. You can drive to Alexandra Park, but I think 1/2 the fun is getting there under your own power.
