Day 5: The Republic of Georgia Tour with Living Roots

In this 14 part series, we present voice recordings and tidbits taken during our tour in The Republic of Georgia that was organized by Living Roots. You'll get to see and hear what we saw each day and how we felt about it. We did not edit the voice recordings or photos so you can really get a sense of how we were feeling and what we experienced on this trip. We hope you enjoy these experiences.

Day 5: Summary

The fifth day of our tour of Georgia found us rained out from our original plan to walk the Becho Valley to the Ushba glacier from our guest house. So we got into the car for a short drive to where we stayed for three nights, Mestia. This was a charming little mountain town from where we could take some rather interesting day trips. Once we arrived in Mestia, we took a steep drive to a historical family home and Svan tower for a tour of the past. Shota convinced me to continue climbing the wooden ladders to peek my head out of the roof at the top of the tower. I'm super glad I listened to him and made the (to me) scary climb up the ladders, but damn, then I had to make it back down. My ass was a bit dirty from sliding down some areas, but I made it back to the bottom without incident. I think Shota was down there waiting for me for about five minutes or so. Then we were off to a gorgeous walk to the Chalaadi glacier. We found ourselves walking through the river of water from the glacial melt and climbing around some rocks/boulders as we made our way ever closer to the glacier itself. As we were walking we thought we heard the snap and deep crackling of an avalanche in the distance. But where was it? Shota pointed to where he thought the sound originated, but we didn't really wait around for it to repeat. After we returned back near the car we had a very peaceful lunch contemplating nature as we sat on a rock and shared some tomatoes, cucumbers, and of course, bread. Our day was capped off with great conversation with Shota while finishing two bottles of his amazing wine (Lagazi Winery). What an incredible day. Hear more from our day in the Svaneti region below.

Highlights include: A great start to the day with an amazing breakfast full of starches, drive to visit to an old family house cum museum in Mestia, amazing walk to the Chalaadi glacier and lunch at a beautiful glacier, drinking two bottles of Shota's fantastic wine
