Day 6: Car Camping - Kyushu, Japan Edition

In this 8 part series, we present voice recordings and tidbits taken during our car camping adventure on the island of Kyushu, Japan. You'll get to see and hear what we saw each day and how we felt about it. We did not edit the voice recordings or photos so you can really get a sense of how we were feeling and what we experienced on this trip. We hope you enjoy these experiences as much as we did!

What a fantastic day! We hauled our cooking equipment and ingredients to the beach area behind our camper van for a little cooking a la Andreas Viestad. None of the runners who went by our shenanigans seemed to be at all phased by what we were doing. What a great way to start the day. We drove a few hours north to what I thought was the start of another Kyushu Olle trail, but came to realize it was the wrong train station. Our misfortune turned to fortune when Zac spotted a stray cat who was in need of some food. So after a stop at the convenience store across the way, the cat was happy and full from eating a delicious onigiri. We then righted ourselves and got on the way to the actual start of the trail and began our 11 km walk. This walk (the Kirishima/Myoken course) walks along a river, through the woods, past onsen, past waterfalls, past shrines, following the path originally taken by the first couple to use the word "honeymoon" to describe what they were doing. It was a gorgeous walk, but we decided we needed to move further north and back into the mountains. We ended our day at an open field campground that was surrounded by mountains in the distance. And luckily for us, they had an on-site onsen where we could actually get clean. Then it was off to bed for an early night in anticipation of a long and perhaps rainy day tomorrow.

Highlights include: Made a lovely sweet potato and egg breakfast on the beach, a few hours drive north to the start of another Kyushu Olle trail (this one with much better results), Zac fed an onigiri to a stray cat we found at the wrong train station, gorgeous walk along the river and through the woods - waterfall viewing, shrine sightings, bamboo, headed further into the mountains for the night, our first night paying for camping in an open field surrounded by mountains and volcanoes and an onsen on the campground property. Headed to bed early so we could rise early and get the hell on the road!
