Porto Azulejos Roundup

When somebody mentions Portugal to you, several things generally come to mind. Surfing, seafood, jellyfish, naval domination, wine, and exquisite tilework known as azulejos. These tiles came to Portugal with the Moors in the 13th century. The designs of these azulejos tiles were at first quite simple, but over time became more and more colorful and ornate.

Azulejos became a way for the Portuguese to tell stories, with many of the tiles depicting birds and animals and scenes from their long history. We were hard pressed to find a surface NOT covered in these ornate tiles and stopping to snap a picture or two.
