What’s that you say, you didn’t know Neustift bei Güssing is a real place? Well, truth be told we didn’t either until we saw this amazing house sit opportunity pop up. The homeowner had such amazing responses from people that she decided to extend her holidays and invited us to care for her dog and two cats while she’s away. We are so excited to be able to explore this part of Austria and even more excited to be doing so in the autumn.
We decided that we absolutely had to spend some time in Vienna (I mean, we are going to be in Austria anyway, right?). Jill had been spying this house sit that just kept popping up - but sadly, the dates just weren’t right. Finally, one came up for a September sit. Still not right. But, we decided to take matters into our own hands and reached out to ask if she needed a sitter for the dates we would be in town. And what do you know? She did! So we will be spending the week getting to know Vienna and returning home to a charming little kitty. It doesn’t get much better than that.
I know, who decides to visit Minneapolis at the start of winter? Well, apparently we do. Zac had an itch to visit friends and so here we are! We’re going to see what’s changed in our former home city and catch up with some of our favorite people. I’m sure there’s going to be lots of eating and hot drinks to keep us warm.
It’s hard to turn down the call of the perfect house sit. Baba (the king of cats) has it all.
A great house in a great location with friends nearby. Add to this the patina of a 3rd time sitting here and you’ve got the makings of a house sit worth building an itinerary around.
I’ve gotten a bug in my ass about a few things lately, one of which is traveling slower and one is visiting friends. So it comes as no surprise that I decided that I had to come back to the US and that some house sits were quickly to follow.
Of course we are going to LA to visit Baba, the king of cats and from there we found a nice long non touristy time to visit Cape Cod.
It’s going to be a nice little break in a large house with a small dog within walking distance of a private beach. And it won’t be Minnesota cold, so we should be fine.
It may not be fair to say that we’ve been avoiding Germany, but to all outward appearances, that seems to be the case. In all our travels in Europe, we’ve spent 1 night in Germany on our honeymoon in 1999. Yes, that’s how old we are, and yes we’ve been married a LONG time.
But we couldn’t pass up the two really cute kittens in a region of Germany that has always been on my list: Bavaria!
Oh, and we have an old friend who lives very near and even though we will see her in the Faroe Islands, it’ll be great to see her again on her home turf.
We frequently talk about how we’ve always wanted to go to a place, and after a while we start to really wonder how true that might be. But in the case of Riga and any other small country in the Baltics, this statement holds true.
It’ll be my birthday (yeah!) when we get into town, so a nice dinner will be in order.
We fly into Tallinn from the Faroe Islands on Jill’s birthday, and then we leave 5 days later on mine. We don’t normally spend such short “layover” amounts of time in a place, and our plans for this region have changed dramatically over the months leading up.
At first we were going to drive from Tallinn to our sit in Austria, but found a house sit in Nuremberg that cut our time shorter. So we decided to have a birthday sampler to give us a taste. It’s always nice to leave something on the plate to come back to later, right?
We’re taking a very quick trip to Copenhagen as we’re using it as our launching point to the Faroe Islands. We are glad to have whatever few days we can in this beautiful city. We are hoping for much better weather than the last time we were here, but then again, we’ll just be happy to be here.
We’ve been wanting to get back to the Balkans after first visiting Croatia in 2015. There are so many things to see and do here, but in the spirit of slower travel we’re going to limit ourselves to visiting Montenegro and a wee bit of Albania. Our plan is to sea gaze and walk, walk, walk while here. We’re hoping to do a guesthouse to guesthouse walk in the ominous sounding Accursed Mountains. We’re both rather eager to see how that goes.
We should have known when we booked cheap throw away tickets (Edinburgh> Dublin) to satisfy immigration in the UK that we would actually wind up using them and changing all our other plans. And so it is. We’ll travel around Dublin for a bit and then a small road trip before we start two house sits - one in county cork for a slew of animals (2 cats, 1 Irish Wolfhound and 1 Chihuahua) and another for a fluffball of a kitty on the west coast. This is our first time to Ireland and we are so excited.
We’re heading back to Scotland! I know it seems like we should just move here already. Scotland is one of our favorite places, so when we saw a house sit come up for Dunblane and two adorable kitties, we knew we had to apply. We’re so fortunate to have booked this sit. We’ll be in Dunblane for a couple of months and will be able to head into Glasgow and Edinburgh both in under an hour. This does sort of feel like a homecoming.
There were several souvenirs from Portugal in the house Jill was staying in in Portishead from December to January. So, when planning to head to Oman fell through, naturally all the subliminal messages about Portugal arose in her brain. Suddenly, it was so clear! Let’s spend the month in Lisbon. So that’s what we’re doing. It’s close to where we are and where we’re going and we loved what little we saw of it the last time we were there. It’s time to explore the city that everyone seems to love.
Zac is heading to Los Angeles. We had the great fortune of sitting for Baba the gorgeous Maine Coon last Thanksgiving and Zac is going back for more. He's going to hang out with Baba and hopefully some other friends while there. Jill's going to be having a totally different experience in the UK for these weeks- brrrr...
We're going to be minding a gorgeous, fluffy Siberian kitty in Portishead, UK. We'll be close enough to Wales to finally do some investigating and close enough to go back to Bath. It's going to be chilly and perhaps a bit snowy, but hey, we need some winter back in our lives. And if things get too bad, we will hunker down in our cottage with the kitty and the fire until it all blows over.
That's right, the entire damn thing! We've decided we're going to road trip around this beautiful country and really try to get a feel for such a massively diverse place. We'll likely pop into Swaziland and maybe Lesotho but our main focus is going to be on SA itself. We're super excited to be exploring this complicated country.
In a series of house sitting interviews that took place over 3 days, we faced the options of going to Ireland, Seattle or South Africa. And while we’ve never been to Ireland, we felt that we would have had enough of the cooler climes and opted to head to South Africa. First stop? Johannesburg!
We're heading back to Scotland!!! Scotland has proven to be one of our absolute favorite places with some of our favorite people living in and around the area. So when a group of our friends said they wanted to have a reunion in Scotland for two weeks, we could not say no. We're so looking forward to hanging out with friends and doing some great walking in this beautiful place. Oh and I'll be reunited with sheep!!!
What's that you say? You don't know where Gjovik, Norway is? Well, we don't really either except that it is north of Oslo. We are incredibly ecstatic to have the opportunity to house sit for two cats during the summer season in this beautiful place. It's a long time before we will be here, but we just keep talking about it. Norway.
We're going to spend a few days in Gothenburg! Well, we'll be right near here for our sit in Hönö, so it felt right to spend a few days in what seems to be a beautiful city. We're hoping to be able to catch an outdoor music festival and just generally enjoy summer life in a Swedish city before moving on to Norway. We're really looking forward to checking out what Gothenburg has to offer.
Hono, Sweden. Been longing to visit? We didn't know this place existed until yesterday when I noticed a posting for house sitters. It's perfect timing as we make our way to Norway and the island looks incredible and what's more...the cat we will be watching is fabulous! While we didn't specifically have Hono on our wish list, we did have a very strong desire to explore more of Sweden. We're so excited to be doing so this summer.
When Zac found out that one of his aunts and cousin will be in Sitges (just outside Barcelona) right around when we are expected to go to Norway, he said "we must go visit them!". And so we are. A short 4 day jaunt to the area to see some of our favorite people should be just what we need right about then.
Truth be told, we both wanted to go to Singapore for a while. When we noticed there's usually good flights to Europe from here, we decided it was a must. So we are doing a quick few days exploring the city and eating our hearts out of whatever cuisine we can before we head to Europe for a while. This will be our last hurrah in Asia but hopefully not our last. Luckily we're missing the Cheetoh - Un showdown by a few days.
Ahhh Bali. We were going to go all out and do a full yoga retreat, but then we decided we wanted to experience a bit of what this place has to offer. So we decided to go à la carte and put together a "retreat" for ourselves. We're going to stay in Ubud and experience the hustle of the city and then retreat back to our homestay. Of course they'll be yoga and some amazing vegan food mixed in. We're looking forward to a bit of pampering.
We are so happy to be returning to Japan. We absolutely loved our first visit here a few years ago and are so excited to be coming back. We're going to be focusing on the southern island and doing lots of hiking and onsen. Hopefully they'll be no typhoons, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions while we're here. Keep your fingers crossed!
Taiwan doesn't seem to be high on many tourist destinations, but some early research has shown that there's a ton to do on this beautiful island. It's likely going to be steamy (it gets super humid here) and reportedly the "no-see-ums" bite like hell. We'll see how we can weather those storms while cat sitting in Taipei for a few weeks and then walking on the many incredible looking trails.
We're heading back to the US. Well, just for a little while. We're going to be house sitting a couple of cats just outside of Portland, Oregon. We love this area and are looking forward to exploring the area some more. It's going to be rainy and chilly, but hopefully we can get outside and do some walking. If not, we know there are tons of good cafes around.
We're so excited! We're doing a house sit in Los Angeles over the Thanksgiving holiday. Not only do we both love LA (maybe I should listen to Hewey Lewis) but the sit is for an amazing kitty named Baba and we will get to see some friends while in town. How fantastic is this? Pretty fucking fantastic.
We didn't have it in mind to go to Merida, but a good friend of ours is getting married and we thought, well, we must go! And so we are off to Merida. Now that we've been doing some research it looks like we are likely going to enjoy ourselves immensely. Oh and we are going to eat well too...
We left ourselves a very small patch of time to be able to visit Barcelona after our time in Morocco. We've both wanted to visit Barcelona for a very long time and it was a great place to jump in between Morocco and Mexico. There's much going on there these days so it such be extra exciting.
Morocco is huge. It's also a place we have both wanted to go for as long as we can remember. I just keep saying "I can't believe we haven't been to Morocco yet" over and over. Well, no we are. We are going to spend a little more than a month exploring the famed cities of this land along with a Berber village homestay and some time in the desert. Never mind that Zac and I both have issues with sand.
I'm just gonna do it again...We're going to Portugal!!! Whew, glad I finally got that out there. Of course we are super excited. We're going to take 12 days and do a quick little tour of as much of the country as we can. We hypothesize that this will only wet our appetites for more. I can't wait to see.
Milano. We passed through here on the train many, many years ago and we are finally going to have a few days to explore all the city has to offer. This is a prefect place to head after our time in Vermiglio and will serve as our location for our flight to our next adventure. But don't think we aren't excited about heading to Milan. We are.
